So...what are YOU up to?

I'm currently working on a YA Dystopian/Sci-Fi AND a YA Contemporary Thriller. I'm just over half-way through with the Dystop and about 8k in to the Thriller.

Was just wondering what all of you, my blogger buddies, are currently working on. What genre are you writing? How far in are you into your project? What stage are you in? Any new and exciting SNIs you are toying with? Revising? Editing? On a writer's hiatus? What are you up to?

  1. Had to set my WIP aside (contemporary fantasy YA) and pick up the first book for revisions. Felt torn for a while, and it took me a bit to immerse myself in ghosts and 1851 again, but now I'm steaming away on rewrites.

I don't do well working on these simultaneously like you are doing--the voices creep into each other's story.

  2. Ghosts in 1851 sounds awesome! Having just read Cherie Priest's Boneshaker I'm feeling love for all things historical, even if I don't write anything that way myself.

I'm working on a YA contemporary fantasy. I'm 50K in with (I'm guessing) about 15K left to go.

  3. Angelica, after that visit you had to that castle, i can imagine your excitement to back into it (if it was research for that story) Good luck.

Andrew, YA contemp fantasy? hmm...didn't know you could merge those into one genre. sounds pretty darn interesting. thanks for sharing!

  4. Queried the hell outta my dystopian and never found it a home :( so now I am editing a YA/NA memoir. Clearly I love genres that are hard to sell :|

  5. haha, ellen. i mean, it's not funny, but i so feel you. the timing in this biz is nearly impossible. you find out what's hot and if you don't already have something going in that genre that's near ready to query, then your SOL cause by the time you do have it done and begin querying it, it seems that it's not longer the "hot" genre. i really should be playing the lotto. i think i might actually have a better shot at winning that. :D

  6. Love your blog makeover! It looks awesome :D I'm swinging between three things at the moment, depending on whatever takes my fancy at the time. Really just trying to make myself write... So. YA fantasy rewrites, YA dystopian trying to write it all coherently and my I-shouldn't-be-working-on-this-yet-but-it's-fun urban fantasy... good luck with all your writing stuff! It's all about perseverance, and at the same time making sure it's still fun. What's the point if it's not fun, at least some of the time?

  7. As you know, I'm working on my contemp romance (CMRH) and it's about halfway done at 31.3K. I have no clue when I'm gonna finish it. Pushing for the end of June, but we shall see if I make it...I just really need to start querying before school starts in early September. The agent interested in my novel is going to open to unsolicited manuscripts Oct. 1, so I want to get it in before then or else my email might be lost in a sea of other submissions.

Just wanted to point out that contemporary fantasy is nearly the same as urban fantasy. Apparently some people say contemporary when it's not in an urban setting.

  8. I'm currently working on a urban fantasy / romance. I'm 36,500 words in and having a lot of fun seeing where my characters choose to take me. Its my first novel so it is proving to be quite the adventure. Fortunately I have an outline (though I tend to call it a map.) so I do know where it is headed. :)

  9. @Cyanz thanks for the blog love good wishes! I wish you the same with all uh...three of your projects. And I agree, as long as you're having fun!

@Karla good luck on the June deadline you've set for yourself. Hope it happens and that you can query on time before school starts! And thanks for the clarification re: contemp fantasy ;-)

@Kathy, So, i guess that would make you a pantser and a ploter??? best of luck to you. I generally have an "idea" of where my story is head, but like you, I love the surprise of not knowing what my characters will do, say, or react. Best of luck on your first novel and if you don't already belong, Absolute write is a WONDERFUL place for writers (both newbies and published) where there is TONS of support for whatever writerly needs you may have. I'm mellymel over there and spend a lot of time in the YA forum :-) Happy writing!

  10. I'm currently plowing my way through my YA Urban Fantasy novel. It's currently at 59 K but I have a feeling that it's going to have to be waaaay longer. Which kinda scares me since I'm afraid it might make it less marketable? I don't know. Like I said, I'm just blindly plowing through it as of the moment. I can't wait until I'm done drafting so I can get started on revising.

  11. Thanks for posting Inlee! And best of luck to you in finishing the first draft! Not sure about wordage. I just write my stories and hope that none them ever go over 80k :D I have almost 50K now on mine and for some reason, I feel like I'm only halfway done. haha. guess there will be a sequel ;-)
